At the end of the 19th, painters and poets from Picasso to Apollinaire put "the art" in Montmartre which since that time will always be associated with their Bohemaian lifestyle. Yoday there are still plenty of artists on the Place du Tertre.
The area's name comes from" Mount of Martyrs",commemorating the first bishop of Paris, ST Denis, who was decapitated here by the Romans in AD 250. Parisians, however call it " la Butte", the knoll as it is the highest point of the city.Throngs of tourists climb the hill for the stipenduous view from the Sacré Coeur but you can also discover Montmartre's charm along the winding back streets, lovely gardens and terraces.
Below the hill, Pigalle ,once home to dance halls and cabarets has largely been taken over by sex shows along the Boulevard de Clichy.
The cimetière de Montmartre is the final restplace of many illustrious, among them Hector Berlioz, Stendhal, Louis Jouvet, Jacques Offenbach, dancer Nijinsky and the pos singer Dalida...
